I began creating light-based works after scraping the surfaces of numerous paintings and burning some of my works. At that stage of my research, fire was not a destructive gesture for its own sake, but an instrument of transmutation: pain had to pass through fire in order to become light. That psychophysical tension, at once destructive and regenerative, had opened a passage through the pictorial matter. Following the process of subtraction and cleansing undertaken during Phase I, I began to recognise light not only as an expressive medium, but also as a presence and a metaphysical point of reference.
Phase II emerges from this transition and represents the first significant approach towards the Immaterial. The research focuses on the possibility of glimpsing: perceiving the invisible within the visible, and the visible within the invisible. Matter is not abandoned, but traversed: glass, colour, heat, movement and projection become thresholds through which to observe the continuous formation and transformation of existence, from micro to macro.
This process is also documented in the video Mya Lurgo, Alchemy at Work, 2004.
